“Start small and enjoy running… it has to be fun!”

When Melissa Forster was given the news last year that her blood results for her liver condition were sky high, she knew it was time to take serious action.

The 32 year old Mum of two from Middlesbrough feared permanent liver damage and knew the best action to take was to become more active, lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Melissa was already running occasionally, managing 3-6 miles a week and entering local races and fun runs in Middlesbrough but she decided to step up her mileage with the support of her husband. Melissa saw the “Destination Boro” challenge online and decided it was the right time to get involved.

Destination Boro allows runners to pick their mileage or destination on a map. Runners are placed “virtually” and then tracked so each run or mile moves them forward to Middlesbrough. The challenge encourages runners to become active whilst raising money for two charities The British Lung Foundation and Zoe’s Place. Melissa chose 617 miles running the distance of Dortmund to Middlesbrough, equal to 16 miles a week.

Melissa, an event photographer, found the challenge focused her running and allowed her to lose weight whilst doing things she had never imagined.

“I wanted to get fit and from the end of November 2016 I took up running seriously and I love it! Every run is a challenge and I enjoy it whilst losing weight which is so important for a healthy lifestyle. I have recently run my hardest race at the Hardmoors Wainstones 9 mile race with 1200ft of elevation. It was so hard, but so rewarding… This time last year I struggled to complete 3 miles!”

Melissa will take part in the Prince Bishops Durham City Run 5K on July 19th as part of the challenge alongside her husband. Melissa told us, “My husband is now hooked and starting his running journey. To achieve goals together is amazing as we compete against each other… it’s all healthy competition!”

We are delighted Melissa has chosen to include the Durham City Run in her challenge, more info on which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/DestinationBoro/

Best of luck to you both on July 19th!
